Mu Lian Saves His Mother
The story follows Mu Lian, a disciple of Buddha Shakyamuni, known for his exceptional virtue. After his mother's death, she descends into the realm of hungry ghosts as punishment for her wicked deeds, where everything she tries to eat turns to charcoal. Mu Lian, seeing her suffering in hell, pleads with Buddha for help. Buddha tells him that his mother’s sins are too great for him to resolve alone and that he must rely on monks from all directions. On the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, they must prepare a hundred dishes and five fruits for a ritual to save her. The story of "Mu Lian Saves His Mother" is said to be the origin of the Zhongyuan Pudu Festival, a tradition still observed today, where households prepare offerings during the Zhongyuan Festival to redeem the souls of lonely and hungry ghosts. Traditional Chinese, Zhuyin, suitable for children over five years old.
